Database Searching at the Des Moines Public Library What is a database? A database contains books and articles (or points to them) like a library does,
but in electronic form on your computer instead of in the library on a shelf. Some of our databases are general, and point to information on all topics, and some are very specific, like genealogy or automobile repair. Some contain the full-text of what you're looking for, so you can print out the whole article from the database, others you have to get the article out of a book or journal in the library's collection or from interlibrary loan.
Databases are very powerful ways of accessing the world of information, especially beyond the four walls of house or library. It means that through your home library you have access to almost anything
in the United States.
*From outside the library, you will need the barcode number from your library card and a valid PIN.
